How to Write Cover Letters

The cover letter is used in addition to your CV when applying for a job. A brief synopsis of laying out this type of letter follows:

Your opening or first paragraph should introduce you, the writer, and what job you are applying for. It is also correct to state how you learned of the job opening.

Your second paragraph should state why you would like the job. Mention why you want to be interviewed and how you are qualified. List your qualifications, experience and what personal qualities you possess that would make you their top applicant. Remember, this is the readers first impression of you. This will either get you an interview or it will not.

Your third paragraph should let them know you have included a recent CV. If there is anything else you think might be relevant to getting your foot in the door, write it here.

Your closing paragraph should list the times you would be available to interview, give a recap of your interest and a quick thank you. Then, close your letter.

Do not just email your resumes with no cover letter. This is not enough. Employers often get many more resumes than they have gotten in the past because email technology has made applying for jobs so easy.

The cover letter must be personalized in order to stand out in the crowd. Three to four well written paragraphs can help the employer know if he or she would like to interview you. Good cover letters are personal. You should include information you know about the company.

To find out more information, read the company website and product materials while also carefully reading the job description. Try to decide what the employer would care most about, and include that in your letter. If you know someone who works in the company, be sure to include a mention of that person. Use that information to call them and discuss the employer's company.

Be sure to relate your skills to their position paying careful attention to each and every sentence. Play up your strengths and explain how they help fit their job. Relate yourself to their organization. The letter is not just about you, it can also be about how you will benefit the organization. This is a very important point.

If it does not, the employer will simply go to the next resume. The cover letter is their first glimpse of you. You must be introduced to employers with class and style. Put yourself in a place to fill the needs of the employer. Describe yourself as having the expertise and specific skills required for the job. Saying something like "I'm right for this job" is not good enough. Describe examples of yourself written well. List achievements, your personality traits and work ethics address each requirement specifically.

Asserting the desires of the employer. Gain an edge on your competition by marketing your strengths. Make sure your letter is tailored to the needs of the employer. Provide examples of you solving problems that are similar to the needs of the employer. The cover letter must be personal like you are having a discussion with the employer. The letter must also place you in a professional light as a person worth interviewing. Make sure your letter is personalized. The letter should be address specifically to someone who can interview and hire people.
