In a condolence letter make sure you have a careful balance of formality and personal condolence. Because the deceased's survivor has been drained emotionally, the letter of condolence should be under one page if possible. The letter should express your respect and admiration of the deceased.
You can also mention some of the deceased's successes, strengths and achievements. If you have one, you should also include a short anecdote describing something from your relationship. Offer sincerely to help in any way that you can. Be sure to include your contact information (cell phone, email address, etc).
If you and the mourner share strong religious beliefs, you can comfort the mourner by stating your belief in the fact that the deceased is in a better place and a happier place. Finally, think of how you would feel in the mourner's situation. Ask yourself what type of condolence you would want in the situation.
